MPF Conservation had the pleasure to conserve three dozen pieces of Imperial Monterey Furniture for Crater Lake National Park's Science and Learning Center, as well as assist them in Interior Design appropriate to the period of the first Superintendent's House.  The Superintendent's House was completely restored and retrofitted for safety in order to become useful once more to serve scientists and students in studies pertaining to Crater Lake and the surrounding area.  The main house is used as library, meeting space, and offices, while the secondary building houses a mixture of reproduction and original furniture suitable for guests to stay overnight.  Much of the funding came from private donors through the Crater Lake Trust, from the Kinsman Foundation, and from the sale of Oregon's Crater Lake license plates.

MPFC is also a donor, in that there was no funding for the conservation documentation, which we are completing, in keeping with our compliance with AIC Ethics.

Click here to see a slideshow on the Conservation of the Imperial Monterey Sofa, approximately 50 minutes long.  It is compatible with most windows players.

Our case studies are in PDF format, and will be posted as we complete them.  Currently, we have::

bullet

IMPERIAL MONTEREY SOFA (PDF):  This sofa was one of the original three dozen pieces bought for the first Crater Lake Superintendent's cabin.  It is a wonderful sofa with a hinged side table!  The finish was severely compromised, there were two breaks, and it had some inappropriate applications of an oil-based stain applied to it.  Original upholstery was hidden under several layers of reupholstery.  Click here to see the new slideshow offered on the conservation!

bullet

IMPERIAL MONTEREY CHAIR (PDF):  This chair was one of the original three dozen pieces bought for the first Crater Lake Superintendent's cabin.  Finish was severely compromised, and had some inappropriate applications of an oil-based stain applied to it.  The original upholstery was hidden under several layers of reupholstery.

bullet

IMPERIAL BUFFET  (PDF):  This piece was one of the original three dozen pieces bought for the first Crater Lake Superintendent's House.  It has unusual features, like a hidden prohibition bar that is accessed through the top drawer!

bullet

IMPERIAL CORNER HUTCH (PDF):  Also one of the original three dozen pieces bought for the first Crater Lake Superintendent's House.

bullet

IMPERIAL TILT-TOP TABLE (PDF COMING SOON!):  This piece was one of the original three dozen pieces bought for the first Crater Lake Superintendent's House.  It has a locking tilt-top!

bullet

IMPERIAL DINING TABLE (PDF COMING SOON):  This piece was one of the original three dozen pieces bought for the first Crater Lake Superintendent's House.

bullet

PRIMITIVE WOOD BOX (PDF):  Possibly made by the by one of the Superintendents, this wood box has been part of the collection in the first Superintendent's House at Crater Lake National Park.  Layers and layers of shellac and paint over many years had created a wonderful patina: We repaired cracks, then cleaned and protected the finish.

bullet

2006 NPS IMPERIAL CHAIRS (PDF COMING SOON):  These chairs were part of the original three dozen pieces bought for the first Crater Lake Superintendent's cabin.  Finish was severely compromised, and had some inappropriate applications of an oil-based stain applied to it.  The original upholstery was hidden under several layers of reupholstery.

bullet

2006 NPS IMPERIAL STRAPPING CHAIRS (PDF COMING SOON):  These strapping chairs were part of the original three dozen pieces  bought for the first Crater Lake Superintendent's cabin.  Finish was severely compromised, and had some inappropriate applications of an oil-based stain applied to it.  The original strapping was disintegrating.
