MPF Conservation is particularly interested in what we term the Modern Classics.  These items are often in need of treatment, and we are concerned that owners understand that they should be treated authentically, and by appropriate conservators.  We have written an article on this subject, which can be accessed here:  The Case for the Conservation of Modern Objects.

Case Studies of Modern Classics are shown, below:

bullet   TWO WASSILY CHAIRS BY MARCEL BREUER (PDF):  A modern family heirloom, these Wassily chairs have their original leather strapping.  The strapping back, arms and seats needed to be repaired and reinforced..
bullet     LUNSTEAD COPPER TABLE (PDF):  A family collects modern pieces, and several serious deep scratches and many small scuff and scratches dulled the finish on this copper table.  MPFC buffed the scratches, and appropriately protected the copper table top from further scratches.
bullet MODERN BRAZIL WOOD DESK & CREDENZA PDF):  A family with a collection of modern classics had this family desk from the grandfather's office, badly bleached by sun and caustic cleanings agents, plus dings and other abrasions.  The grain was open.  Additionally, he was in a wheelchair and they wanted the desk modified without damaging it to allow for his chair to fit.
bullet     2002 EGG CHAIR BY ARNE JACOBSON (PDF COMING SOON):  A modern family heirloom, this early Egg Chair was destroyed by a bad upholsterer who drilled holes through the back and placed buttons to hold the cream fabric in place.  MPFC restored the piece to its original condition using conservation techniques, and using approved upholstery.
